Finally they fall in love and have a son, Arthur, who is born with the power to communicate with marine life forms. Atlanna is forced to abandon her family and return to Atlantis, entrusting to her loyal counselor Nuidis Vulko the mission of training Arthur. Under the guidance of Vulko, Arthur becomes a skilled warrior, but is rejected by the Atlanteans for being a mestizo and finally leaves Atlantis behind.
A year after the invasion of Steppenwolf, [N 1] Arthur confronts a group of pirates trying to hijack a nuclear submarine. Their leader, Jesse Kane, dies during the confrontation while his son, David, swears to take revenge on Arthur. Later, David attacks Atlantis at the behest of Orm, Arthur’s younger half brother and the king of Atlantis, who uses the attack as a pretext to declare war on the surface. King Nereus of Xebel swears allegiance to Orm’s cause, but his daughter Mera, who has been committed to Orm, refuses to help them and travels to the surface to ask Arthur for help, earning her trust by saving Thomas from a wave of tides sent by Orm. Arthur, reluctantly, accompanies Mera to a date with Vulko, who urges him to find the Trident of Atlan, a magical device that belonged to the first ruler of Atlantis, to claim his rightful place as king. They are ambushed by Orm’s men, and Mera and Vulko escape, while Arthur is captured.
Orm visits Arthur in captivity and announces that Atlanna was executed for the crime of having a mestizo son, blaming Arthur and the surface for his death. He offers Arthur the chance to leave forever, but Arthur, on the other hand, challenges him to a duel in a submarine lava ring. Orm wins the lead and almost kills Arthur before Mera rescues him. Together, Arthur and Mera travel to the Sahara desert, where the trident was forged, and unlock a holographic message that takes them to Sicily, where they get the coordinates of the trident. Meanwhile, Orm provides David with an Atlantean armor and weaponry and sends him to arrest them, imprisons Vulko upon learning of his betrayal, and forces the remaining kingdoms of Atlantis to swear allegiance to him and his campaign against the surface.
In Sicily, David, who now calls himself Manta Negra, ambushes Arthur and Mera and wounds Arthur before being thrown off a cliff to his apparent death. Mera takes care of Arthur’s wounds as they travel to the whereabouts of the trident and encourages him to embrace his destiny like a hero. Upon reaching their destination, Arthur and Mera are attacked by a legion of amphibious monsters known as the Trench, but they manage to defend themselves and reach a wormhole that transports them to an unknown sea located in the center of the Earth. There, they meet unexpectedly with Atlanna, who was sacrificed to the Trench for her crimes, but managed to escape and reach the unknown sea, where she has been stranded ever since.
Arthur confronts Karathen, the mythical leviathan that keeps the trident, and expresses his determination to protect both Atlantis and the surface, proving his worth and claiming the trident, which gives him control over the seven seas. Arthur, Mera and Atlanna lead an army of sea creatures in battle against Orm and his followers, who renounce their obedience to Orm and embrace Arthur as the true king upon learning that he is handling the trident. Arthur defeats Orm in combat but chooses to save his life, and Orm accepts his fate after discovering that Arthur found and rescued his mother. Atlanna returns to the surface to join Thomas, while Arthur ascends the throne, with Mera at his side.
