according to books

In the book A Song of Ice and Fire, Orys Baratheon is rumours to be King Aegon I Targaryen’s half bastard brother. King Aegon I is the conqueror of seven Kingdoms.

Orys leads an army which slews the last of the Storm King, Argilac the Arrogant. Orys captures his castle of Storm’s End.

For Orys’s loyal service, He is made the Lord of Storm’s End and given the permission to form his own Great House, marrying the daughter of Argilac.

Orys takes the Sigil and words of Argilac as his own. House Baratheon becomes the youngest house in Westeros, ruling for about 300 years.

Ruling places

House Baratheon rules over the south-eastern shores in Westeros. This area is known as Stormlands.

This has produced a number of great warriors such as Lyonel Baratheon, the laughing storm. He marries into the royal house of Taragaryen’s many generations ago.

When Robert Baratheon’s love Lyanna Stark gets kidnapped by Rhaegar Targaryen, he gets angered and raise the banners and rebellion against King Aerys II. Along with his childhood best Friend Ned Stark.

Both Ned and Robert joins the several houses and raise the civil war known as Robert’s rebellion.

Robert’s army smashes out the royal host at the battle of Trident and puts out to rout.

The treachery of House Lannister delivers delivers the capital at King’s Landing to Robert. Robert agrees to marry Cersei Lannister in gratitude of his father’s pledge.

Robert becomes the King and make his brother Stannis (a year older than him) Lord of Dragonstone, an ancestral island stronghold of the Targaryens, and his younger brother Renly, the Lord of Storm’s End.

There are some minor differences in the books, comparison to TV series names like ‘Argilac‘ as ‘Argalic‘. It isn’t clear that it is an error or change.

There is another change is that, after crowning himself the King, Renly doesn’t change the banner design of Baratheon Sigil.

After Robert’s death

When Robert and Renly both gets dead, there are only Stannis, his wife and his daughter Shireen remains alive.

There isn’t any mentions of close relations of this family in any of the novels, who can claim itself to rule the House Baratheon.

Robert may have many bastards, but none of them claims to be legitimate heirs.

But Robert does have one acknowledged bastard son Edric Storm, because his mother comes from a noble family. Robert doesn’t has any part in raising him, but instead he sends him to foster at Storm’s End.

In this TV series, House Baratheon’s banner depicts crown around the Stag’s neck, but in the novels it is above the head of Stag.

The original Stag sigil used by House Durrandon has a crown, but when Orys Baratheon takes the Sigil it is been removed. This is due to the Baratheons were ruling under the Targaryens.

The crown gets added nearly after 300 years later, after defeating King Aerys II by Robert Baratheon.
